An Atheist's God

By Steve Gillman

How great it is to love
To be in this state of gratitude
It is the closest thing to faith
For an atheist like I

How terrifying to be loved
To be as a gift to another
When everything I do or say
Might take their gift away

To be loved by another is
To be given the power to hurt
Which some may desire
But none can be happy with

So I reject the love of God
To believe would be a burden
His love would only enslave me
And I am sure to disappoint

But something inside loves ALL
Knowing all will cease to be
And in this I feel the sacred
In the atheist god in me
